The name Tybee is derived from a Native America word meaning “salt.” Early Native American settlers oystered, fished and collected salt on the island. For two centuries after the Spanish explorers discovered Tybee Island, it was used as an occasional landing and supply point by Native Americans, as well as Spanish, French and British expeditions. In 1736 a lighthouse was built on the north end of Tybee Island and a whale oil lamp was used to alert ships to the presence of land. In the 1750s, British soldiers constructed another important landmark - Fort Tybee - which was renamed Fort Screven in honor of a revolutionary war hero killed in action. Tybee Island and its historical landmarks survived the American Revolution and the Civil War to usher in the new millennium unscathed.

In fact, the Tybee Island Lighthouse has been restored after storm and war damage, and is currently owned by the Georgia Historical Society.
